CHISINAUmetaverseandgamingcrypto, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Moldova announced Friday that 64 political parties are eligible to participate in the presidential election and the republican constitutional referendum scheduled for Oct. 20.

The CEC has published the list of these political factions, confirming that all registered parties at the Public Services Agency can nominate candidates for the election and referendum, provided they do so before the official election date is set.

On Oct. 20, Moldovan citizens will not only elect their next president but also vote in a referendum on a pivotal constitutional question: "Do you support the change of the Constitution for the Republic of Moldova's accession to the European Union?"

Under the constitution, a presidential candidate must win an absolute majority (50 percent plus one vote) to be elected. Otherwise, the top two candidates will proceed to a runoff.

The referendum was initiated by President Maia Sandu and supported by 46 members of parliament, with approval from the Constitutional Court.

Sandu, elected in 2020, is Moldova's sixth president and first female president.
